Projects
Federal Policy Evaluation (for University of California San Francisco, CA.) Conducted longitudinal analyses in SUDAAN using Child Component of NHIS (National Health Interview Survey) to examine if Medicaid and SCHIP expansions have reduced disparities in health and health care use among income groups. Results of this study are being used to inform policy to improve coverage for children.
Social class and smoking behavior (for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, MA) Examined the US burden of smoking using diverse socioeconomic measures. Cross-sectional SUDAAN analyses of multiple modules of the NHIS 2000. Elizabeth M. Barbeau, Nancy Krieger, Mah-Jabeen Soobader. American Journal of Public Health. 94(2):269-278. February 2004.
Socioeconomic Inequalities in Maternal and Infant Health (for University of California San Francisco, CA.) Evaluated numerous technical aspects of summary measures used to monitor socioeconomic related health inequalities. Based on these results, developed SAS models for multiple inequality measures including Slope Index of Inequality. Analyzed MIHA (Maternal and Infant Health Assessment), ATM (Access to Maternal Care), and PRAMS (Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System) data sets to quantify socioeconomic inequalities in low birth weight, delayed prenatal care, breast feeding initiation/continuation, and unplanned births. These results are now being used for policy monitoring.
Neighborhood Effects on CVD and all Cause Mortality (for Stanford University, CA.) Developed survival models in SUDAAN to examine how social and physical features of neighborhoods interact with individual factors in predicting All-Cause and CVD mortality. This study used the NHIS/NDI (National Health Interview Survey / National Death Index) linked to census tract level data.
Economic Costs of Childhood Injuries (for University of Rochester, NY.) Mentored team of five MD’s and research staff with all details of writing and submission of NIH grant including development of sampling and analytic methodology and budgeting.
Bias of aggregate-level measures of socioeconomic status (for National Center of Health Statistics) Investigated bias of aggregate-level measures of socioeconomic status as proxies for individual-level measures. Developed SUDAAN models with NHIS data geocoded to tract and block group levels. Soobader M., LeClere FB, Hadden WC, and Maury B., 2001. Examining the Validity of Using Aggregate Data to Proxy Individual Socio-economic Status: Does the Size of the Aggregate Matter? American Journal of Public Health, 91-632-636.
